Don’t build a Subaru FA or FB engine without these. Rev with peace of mind!

The Subaru FA & FB engines (eg. FA20 in the Toyota 86) have a fatal flaw. When a valve spring loses pressure, the rocker arm assembly can fall out. If it's picked up by the camshaft, it gets shot out the tappet cover, causing oil to spill onto the exhaust headers, potentially catching fire.

Now, without the rocker, the valve can drop inside the cylinder and destroy the piston. Yes, sometimes it’s an over rev but it can happen across the rev range even on your daily driver.

So if you drive a Toyota 86, or any Subaru with an FA or FB engine, this IS the most important upgrade you can do to save you an expensive engine rebuild. It’ll give you peace of mind when driving.

YES it's the same on the 2022 GR86 and NO the spring recall has not fixed this.

Why Choose Our Rocker Retainer Kit?

Engine rebuilds can cost thousands of dollars, often ranging between $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the extent of the damage. Parts alone, such as pistons, valves, gaskets, can add up quickly. Our Rocker Retainer Kit, is a fraction of that cost and offers peace of mind by preventing a potential catastrophic failure that could leads to an expensive rebuild.

Protect your investment and drive with confidence knowing your engine is safeguarded.

The price is set in Australian dollars and will automatically convert based on your local currency hence it will fluctuate slightly day-to-day.

If you aren't 100% satisfied with your purchase, we'll provide a refund within 30 days of receiving your rocker retainers.

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS

Valve Clearance/Lash Specifications for the FA20 Engine:

  • Inlet: 0.10 - 0.16 mm (cold)
  • Exhaust: 0.21 - 0.27 mm (cold)

These specifications fall on the looser side of the tolerances recommended by various sources, allowing for safe operation and optimal performance under higher load or racing conditions. For those seeking a tighter clearance, another common set of specifications is:

  • Inlet: 0.10 - 0.15 mm (cold)
  • Exhaust: 0.20 - 0.24 mm (cold)

Recommended Clearances
Our go-to settings for most applications are 6 thou (0.1524 mm) for the inlet and 10 thou (0.254 mm) for the exhaust. This balance ensures reliable operation, especially when pushing your engine at high RPMs or under heavy load.

We have a worksheet to help you set up the valves correctly, which you can find here: Denstoj Subaru FA20 Valve
Adjustment Worksheet
.

For full instructions on fitting our Rocker Retainer Kit on FA and FB Subaru engines, see our detailed guide here: Fitting Instructions for Rocker Retainer Kit on FA and FB Subaru Engines.

Important Notes
The Subaru FA & FB engines use solid (not hydraulic) pivots, meaning lash adjustment is done manually via shims. These shims are available separately from your local Toyota dealership according to the standard valvetrain setup procedure.

Please install at your own risk
It’s critical that the clips are installed correctly to avoid placing unnecessary load on them, except in preventive situations where the rockers are unloaded. While our Rocker Retainer Kits are OEM drop-in compatible, always ensure clearances are set properly for your specific engine during any valvetrain work.

DO NOT build a Toyota 86 engine until you watch this 👇

THE PROBLEM

  • Disaster

The Subaru FA20 engine in the Toyota 86 has a fatal flaw.

  • Floating rocker

When a valve spring loses pressure, the rocker arm can fall out.

  • Projectile

If it's picked up by the camshaft, it gets shot out the tappet cover!

  • Destroyed

Without the rocker, the valve can drop inside the cylinder and destroy the engine.

Ricardo from California

I wish I knew about this sooner

"I found out the hard way...I started the car, heard some sound, didn't think much of it and then on my short drive to my appointment, I noticed smoke and a trail of oil...FML"

Patrick from Colorado

My weekend ended early

"First session of open lapping my engine blew. One of the rockers blasted a hole in my valve cover. Pieces keep falling out and I've got a nice hole in the block."

Valve float animation

We didn't know about this problem either until we blew up three engines in the Australian Toyota 86 race series!

We were sick of spending thousands of dollars rebuilding new motors, so we designed a fix.

Demonstration on the engine👇

OUR SOLUTION

CLIP

We've designed a clip that holds the rocker in place when the valve spring loses control of the valve, causing the rocker to become unloaded.

PIVOT

To do this, we've re-designed the pivot so that it has a groove for the clip to attach to.

In normal operation, the groove is wide enough so that the clip clears the pivot, however, if the rocker tries to dislodge it is caught by the wider part of the groove.

CLIP + PIVOT

Combined, the rocker is held secure in the valvetrain. There are no changes to the rocker arm.

Now even better - time to upgrade

We have been using the rocker retainers since the beginning when Dennis designed the kit.
Recently while the engine was apart for inspection we upgraded to the up to date edition.
With even higher retention the rockers are now held in place even better.

If you have one of the early designs I would highly recommend upgrading to the latest design.

Brilliant work Denstoj Auto Centre and Dennis Stojanovski

Must have for any top end work

If you’re doing any sort of top end work, this product is a must have to improve the reliability of your FA20 motor.

If you’re adjusting valve clearance like I was, or taking off valve cover or cam carrier for a reseal, it’s almost like a “yeah sure why not” sort of situation to throw them in your engine. If you do something like road racing where you push your car hard, and happen to over rev your engine or have any sort of event that can cause valve float/valve spring surge, this is a great piece of mind knowing that your FA20 is gonna live to fight another day.

As of writing this, I have not yet put the engine back in my FRS with these clips on, however this boosts the confidence I have in driving this car, knowing that I will have a very reliable motor thanks to the Denstoj rocker retainer clips.

FAQs

Didn’t the spring recall fix this issue?

No. The spring recall was an issue with the spring material fracturing. As the rockers are still floating, they can still dislodge with the replacement blue springs.

Hasn't the redesigned beehive valve springs in the 2022 GR86/BRZ fixed this issue?

No. The rockers are still floating. They can still dislodge with beehive valve springs.

Do these work on the Subaru FA24 motor in the 2022+ GR86/BRZ?

Yes.

Do these work on the Subaru FA24F motor in the 2022+ WRX?

Yes.

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes! We ship worldwide with Australia Post, DHL and FedEx. Head to checkout for pricing.
