How it should be from the factory. Improve the reliability of your Toyota G16E-GTS engine and rev with confidence!

Drop-in replacements for hydraulic lash adjusters (13750-70020) that include a retaining groove for a clip to attach to the rocker. This adds a security mechanism if the rocker loses spring pressure due to a valve float/bounce/stick situation.

The best solutions are simple. It's a clip that attaches to the rocker and a groove in the hydraulic lash adjuster that 'catches' the rocker if the valve spring loses pressure for a split-second due to a valve float situation.

If you haven't seen this solution before, it's actually quite common. More expensive performance engines such as the B58 BMW engine in the Supra and Lexus' flagship 2UR-GSE 5.0-litre V8 in the LC500 and RC F run rocker retainers. It's important to know that this is not a fix for valve float; instead, it adds a security mechanism to reduce the chance of a rocker dislodging if the valve spring loses pressure for a split-second due to a valve float situation.

It's a no-brainer preventive measure when building a high-performance engine. These should be stock on every engine Toyota makes.

Why Choose Our Rocker Retainer Kit?

Engine rebuilds can cost thousands of dollars, often ranging between $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the extent of the damage. Parts alone, such as pistons, valves, gaskets, can add up quickly. Our Rocker Retainer Kit is a fraction of that cost and offers peace of mind by reducing the risk of a catastrophic failure that could lead to an expensive rebuild.

Protect your investment and drive with confidence knowing your engine is safeguarded.

The price is set in Australian dollars and will automatically convert based on your local currency hence it will fluctuate slightly day-to-day.

If you aren't 100% satisfied with your purchase, you can request a return within 30 days of receiving your rocker retainers. See our refund policy for details.

What's in the box

12x Denstoj hydraulic lash adjusters, billet alloy steel, heat-treated. 12x Denstoj rocker retainer clips, high carbon steel, heat-treated. One kit does every intake and exhaust valve on the three-cylinder G16E-GTS.

Fitment

Toyota GR Yaris (XP210) and Toyota GR Corolla (GZEA14), G16E-GTS engine, 2020 to present.

Drop-in with the factory camshafts and valve springs. Also works with Kelford camshafts and Kelford KVS264 valve springs.

Installation

The engine does not need to come out. We recommend dropping the timing, then allow about 4 to 6 hours. It is easiest to remove the camshafts to install. Keep track of the valve caps on top of each valve stem, and refit the tappet cover seals and gaskets, or the rockers can suffer oil loss.

No shimming is necessary. Hydraulic lash adjusters set their own clearance under oil pressure.

We recommend soaking the hydraulic lash adjusters in clean engine oil for 30-60 minutes before installation. Do not insert any objects into the lash adjusters, as this can damage the internal one-way valve.

Shipping, duties and returns

Ships from Newcastle, Australia, at a flat rate per order however many kits you buy. Import duties and taxes, if any, are calculated at checkout. Not 100% satisfied? You can request a return within 30 days of receiving your kit. See our refund policy for details.

Part numbers

Our hydraulic lash adjuster is a drop-in replacement for Toyota 13750-70020. No change is required to the OEM rocker arm, Toyota 13801-25010.

Springs and cams

Drop-in when you are keeping the factory camshafts and valve springs. If you are upgrading, we recommend Kelford camshafts with Kelford KVS264 valve springs. If the car is otherwise stock, keep the original valve springs rather than adding load to the valvetrain.

THE PROBLEM

Why G16E rockers come off

The rocker arms in the G16E-GTS float. They are held by valve spring pressure and nothing else. Lose that pressure for a split second, in a valve float, a bounce or a sticking valve, and the rocker is free to leave its lash adjuster. It is a highly strung three-cylinder, and the harder you rev it the more that matters. A rocker retainer is designed to hold the rocker in place and reduce that risk.

1. Spring control is lost.

A valve floats, bounces or sticks and the rocker is no longer loaded.

2. The rocker lets go.

With nothing holding it, the rocker can lift off the hydraulic lash adjuster.

3. The cam catches it.

Picked up by the camshaft, it can go through the tappet cover.

4. The valve drops.

Without the rocker, the valve can drop into the cylinder and destroy the piston.

Valve float is not the only trigger, and this kit is not a cure for valve float. It is the catch for the moment it happens.

THE INSTALL

THE FIX

A clip and a lash adjuster. No changes to the rocker.

Denstoj rocker retainer clip

The clip

The rocker retainer clip is high carbon steel, heat-treated. It holds the rocker in place the moment the valve spring unloads.

The hydraulic lash adjuster

Our hydraulic lash adjuster carries a groove for the clip. In normal running the groove is wide enough that the clip clears it. If the rocker tries to dislodge, the wider part of the groove catches it.

Together

The rocker stays secure in the valvetrain, with no changes to the rocker arm.

Nothing new, just missing.

BMW fits rocker retainers to the B58 in the Supra, and Lexus to the 2UR-GSE V8 in the LC500 and RC F.

A safety net, not a cure for valve float.

Match your springs to your cams, and let the clip catch the rest.

THE COST

Nearly $18,000 for a new engine, or one kit

That's what a new OEM G16E-GTS long engine costs in Australia, before fitting. This rocker retainer kit is a fraction of that, fitted once.

THE ANSWERS

Rocker retainer FAQs

GR Corolla vs GR Yaris: the top 5 engine differences

Why would I fit these?

To reduce the risk of a rocker arm dislodging and destroying your engine in a valve float, bounce or stick.

How likely is it?

No engine is flawless, and the G16E-GTS is a highly strung three-cylinder. The more power you make and the harder you rev, the greater the risk of a rocker letting go. This kit adds a layer of reliability.

Do they work with the OEM rockers?

Yes. There is no change to the rocker arm.

Are they compatible with Kelford springs and camshafts?

Yes. They are drop-in replacements for the OEM hydraulic lash adjusters and work with both the factory springs and cams and with Kelford.

Should I upgrade the valve springs too?

In most cases we recommend Kelford KVS264 valve springs. If the car is otherwise stock you are better off keeping the original springs, so you are not adding load to the valvetrain.

Can I fit them without removing the camshafts?

It's possible, and we've done it, but we'd recommend dropping the timing. It's easier.

Does the engine have to come out, and how long does it take?

No. The engine stays in the car. Drop the timing and set aside about 4 to 6 hours.

Do I need to shim anything?

No. Hydraulic lash adjusters set their own clearance under oil pressure.

Will the clips tick or wear the valvetrain?

No, not when fitted correctly. The clip only engages when the rocker unloads.

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Newcastle, Australia.
